RE: Small tree with exfoliating bark

I love your state and consider it to be one of the several sister states
to Maine. In the north I really feel like I'm in Maine, in other
sections it's definitely Midwestern to me. But your area---SE---might be
more like the eastern US woodlands. Could it be hop hornbeam? Ostrya
verginiana)Yes, I'd love a picture. Planted, though? Hop hornbeam is
seldom planted, usually encountered. Oh well.

Subject: Small tree with exfoliating bark

I need help to identify a tree I have seen here in SE Wisconsin in
several locations. Trunk diameter about 6 inches or less.
Generally planted as a multi-stemmed shrub. Bark is finely
exfoliating (i.e. not in large sheets) and is light grey-brown in
color (definitely not white) It's probably one of the beeches or
birches.

Does anyone have a picture?
