I'm very fond of Robinia hispida, (Rose Acacia) though I'm sure a lot of
people hate it.
When I first began gardening I was driving down a busy residential road and
saw these beautiful small trees dripping with pink flowers. Each raceme
took the shape of bountiful grapes. An old man was working in the yard and
I pulled into his drive and asked what they were. He said, "You like that
tree? I give you that tree." I protested that I just wanted the name and
he replied something that sounded like Lotus. And he kept insisting he
would give me the tree, so I accepted. He was from the Ukraine and said he
saves starts of it for people who stop by like me, but that it had to be dug
in October, so I should come back, which I did.
I've attempted to train mine into a tree like his, but I've never done as
nice a job as he did. It gets so top-heavy from all the flowers. Yes it
suckers, but I've given some to people who've asked (with cautions) and the
rest just pull out easily. Actually, over time it suckers a lot less. I
don't think I've seen one come up the last couple of years.
