I live in zone 5 and detest cotoneaster. They simply devour leaves and
getting the plant to give up leaves is a major spring chore. My favorite
is the bearberry - Arctostaphylos uva-ursi massachusetts. It thrives in a
clay soil with only minor winter damage (after twelve years). I also like
the creeping junipers (blue rug) but they tend to allow grasses to invade.
