Re: Japanese Maple, When to trim?>

Tim, Don is right. Habit is cultivar specific in Japanese maples and not
achieved by pruning. You really need to know exactly which cultivar you've
got to figure out whether it will naturally be weeping or upright. If, at
four feet, it seems to want to grow upright, that's probably what it will
do and IMO pruning it to try to make it weep will only ruin its form, not
help it.

Foliage Gardens lists many cultivars with some photos and had a page of
information about Japanese Maples. URL is:
http://backyardgardener.com/Foliagegardens/abmaples.html

Here's a Japanese site with photos of several cultivars; perhaps you will
recognize yours...URL is: http://www.inh.co.jp/~hayasida/E-repo12.html

Dave's Nursery might be a better bet to help you ID your plant - has photos
of several varieties of cut leaf maples - it's in frames, but I think this
URL should take you to the maple page:

http://www.davesnursery.com/acer.htm

Mountain Maples site also has a lot of photos of different maples...might
be helpful, plus a good article on aesthetic pruning of Japanese
maples...URL to the article is:

http://mountainmaples.com/cgi-bin/article2.cgi/echcbffhg

URL to their photogallery is:
http://mountainmaples.com/cgi-bin/album.cgi/echcbffhg

It is possible that they might be able and willing to ID your specific
plant if you can send them a photo...I think it well worth sending them
email to find out. You really do need to know who you're growing so you
know what to expect and how best to care for it ;-)
