Only thing that I can think of that might be that big and growing up
near Chicago would be Pinus wallichiana.  I have a picture of a cone

The cones tend to be pretty resinous and large; the one in this picture
was about 12" long.  The tree itself is reminiscent of a white pine,
although it's a lot more graceful and droopy (in part because of the
floppy needles that are about twice as long).  

Does it look remotely similar?  Of course, the other possibility is
that it came from someone's holiday decorations...  ;)
