Japanese Maple, When to trim?>

Hello folks,
I have a 4 ft Japanese Maple, sold as a "Cutleaf Japanes Maple" although I
don't know its Latin name. I sawe a lot of them in Maryland and most had been
trimmed into a weeping pattern. I presume this is a Bonsai technique,.
Anyway, Mine is fairly upright and I would like to give it a weeping habit if
possible. First, when is the right time of year to trim it? and second,
Should I just clip off the verticals above the height I want it?
I have a digital camera and can send pics to anyone who can handle the
attachment.
