Query set fruit?

My newly planted Malus "John Downie" is flowering. My question is: should I
remove the blossom to prevent fruiting in its first year? Is this the best
treatment in the long run? Advice gratefully received as I just heard this
rumour and wonder if it is true. TIA. Avril.
