Bettye,
Like all other woody plant material, you should strive to achieve a good
structure from early on. If you have a proliferation of branches all coming
from one point you will have a very weak branching structure. Try to select
a good leader and a number of well-spaced, evenly distributed, wide-angled
branches (sometimes that is easier said than done!).
