Stewartia

Last spring I purchased and planted a Stewartia koreana. It was about 36", in
a gallon container, at the time. It has grown to about 6', and there is a lot
of bushy growth in the middle, with long stems reaching out and up. Should I
be doing any pruning, or thinning of all the growth near the trunk, or just
leave it alone for a few years?

Subject: Welcome to the woodyplants list!

This list has never been formally introduced, so I think it's high time
we did so. I've been meaning to do this sooner, but time doesn't seem
to be on my side. :)

The woodyplants list is intended for people to talk about the use of
woody plants in landscape environments, care and maintenance of these
plants, and anything else dealing with trees, shrubs, or vines.

Woody plants are my favorite of all, although I usually have to opt for
less space-consuming perennials unless the plant is just too "cool" to
pass up. I learned about them from one of the best teachers I know --
prior to his course I had never even thought to recognize the diversity
around us.

I'll introduce myself and present my background here, and then I'll shut
up so that we can talk about woody plants!

I received my Bachelor's of Landscape Architecture from the University
of Illinois and later pursued a Master's in Horticulture from the same
school. I'm still working on the degree and really have to get my rear
in gear. Computers have always been my hobby, so when I was offered a
position as UNIX System Administrator for Wolfram Research, Inc. I jumped
at the opportunity. Needless to say, my studies slipped quite a bit
(especially when my boss quit and I was "promoted" into his position).
I recently moved across town to NCSA from Wolfram, giving me more time
to pursue my own interests. We founded Mallorn Computing to help the
horticultural industry with technology-based solutions, and I still plan
on finishing my degree.

So, with all of that said and done, I'm pleased to welcome you all to
the list, and I look forward to hearing about your woody plants!

Chris
