I thought I answered all this already, so pardon me if I'm repeating myself,
but...I live on Long Island, zone 7b. LI is generally on the acidic side, as
well as sandy. However, I have added masses and masses of aged horse manure
and compost and the soil is quite nice. Everything I plant does well (except
for two hydrangeas, but that's another post!) I have also not done soil
testing in the backyard, where the tree would go.
The area is more dry than wet, but not problematically so.
The tree could go either in full sun, or the high shade of a limbed up Maple.
I would prefer a smaller sort of tree, sort of an understory sort.
LI is fairly temperate...our lows are not terribly low, and our highs are not
terribly high. I know that's pretty vague, but I do not know the specific
highs and lows offhand.
This does not need to be a shade producing tree, and it would be nice if it
had several seasons of interest with flowering, changing leaves in autumn,
interesting bark, or whatnot.
Not asking for much (ha ha), just the perfect climbing tree!

Bettye,
Please tell us where you live, and any special environmental conditions the
tree might be exposed to. Is it in full sun? Is the soil heavy (clay) or
light (sandy), acid or alkaline, wet or dry, what are your winter and summer
temperatures?
