There are some very nice viburnums.  Plicatum tomentosum 'Summer
Snowflake', is a favorite of mine.  Also, the spireas would probably do
well.  Maybe not the new varieties,, but the older, tougher, meaner ones
are nearly impossible to kill.
Also, hamamelis.  And how about enkianthus?  And microbiota is supposed
to be impervious to cold.  And then there is Chamacyparis pisif.
'Boulevard Cypress'.  It loves shady situations and is a very nice
effect.....
