Hi Lillian,
I'm sorry no one responded to your last post. We
all get busy, I guess.
I wanted to respond to let you know the list is alive
(if not prolific), but I really don't have the answers to
your questions. I live in Oregon (rhododendron
heaven) but they are so common around here I
don't grow any myself.
We may have similar climates; I'm a 6b/7a east of
Portland, Oregon. My favorite flowering shrubs that
tolerate shade are several of the viburnums, aronia
(chokeberry), camellias, enkianthus, leycesteria
formosa, forthergilla minor, daphne and corylopsis.
If you are interested in any of those, I can comment
on my experiences related to them.
I do have one philadelphus, 'Virginal,' which is
about 7 years old and 6' x 8'. You can smell it all
over the yard when its in bloom.

For mine is just a little old-fashioned garden where
the flowers come together to praise the Lord and
teach all who look upon them to do likewise.
