Sharon, you are right to shake your head!   One should NEVER, NEVER, NEVER
leave trees with their roots exposed.  Not even in the shade.  Not for an
hour.  
During so for days and in the sun should be a criminal offense.  Someone
should shake more than a head at that landscaper.  Maybe a big stick.  If your
neighbor has not already paid them, I would say she should fire them!  Those
folks should not be in business. --Janis
