Hi all,
I grew about 10 Sassafras in 1/2 gallon milk cartons this year. I cut
out most of the bottom of carton so the roots are pruned as they grow
out. All seem to be doing well. Most of the younger trees have
unlobed leaves, but my large trees have mittens. I do think, however,
that the leaf shape must be determined by environmental stress. Perhaps
it is not our dry fall, but our wet spring that determined the shape.
My one established Sassafras grew like gang busters because of the 20 or
so inches of rain this spring. The most vigorous shoots seemed to have
unlobed leaves, but as soon as the growth slowed the mittens appeared.
Bill, how much new growth did your Sassafras put on this year?

No, these are the upper branches. These trees are about 10-12' tall so
I
can't for sure see the very top leaves. I wonder if these are reaching
their
maturity and that's the explanation. They're still a wonderful tree.
Scent,
interesting leaves, nice growth habit and great fall color. What more
could
you want in a tree?
