I agree that the leaf shape is probably determined by environmental
conditions.  Has anyone performed any kinds of studies about leaf
surface area on the four different types of leaves that Sassafras 
exhibit?  Surely some poor graduate student somewhere checked this
out..  :)

So perhaps there is more surface area on unlobed leaves, so these will
be present where there is less overall sunlight.  More lobing could
be evident where there is the most sun, minimizing burning?
