flash memory sticks are for temporary stoprage of data that you are transferring from one computer to another. For long term storage, you can buy an external hard drive (a 120 GB will cost around $100), or for even more safety you can write data onto CDs (800 kb),  DVDs (4 GB or so), or even Blu-ray discs (25 to 50 GB)

These are nice to be sure. But be aware that they are not reliable for keeping things for the long term. I don't know the mechanism, but sometimes you'll find that your files have been corrupted and the images or other files not retrievable. Or 75% are gone and 25% are seemingly OK. I know this has happened to me, so just make sure you have some other record you can get to in case one of these gizmos punks out on you. Best is a backup system. Or CDs. Or maybe one of these cool internet storage boxes.

Somebody else on the list must be more knowledgeable about this than I am. Please advise.
