I remember the polio epidemic, too. My mother was scared to death I would get it. I was fascinated by the iron lungs.

I went through a terrible polio epidemic in South Texas when I was
young...closed all public places...my dad had a touch but regained the use
of his arm.  When the vaccine came out several years later, we were
thrilled to get it.  All such precautions have downsides on someone whose
chemistry is different...we just don't seem to be able to accept risk and
non-blame consequences.  Too many people don't remember or know that many
died of infections before WWII.

Or ever had to suffer though "childhood" diseases themselves. I still
remember my bouts of measles and mumps. Smallpox and polio vaccines were
available when I was a child, so I didn't have to endure those. As
uncomfortable as injections can be, it's nothing to the malaise of the
illness. No child I am responsible for will have to go through any of
that!
