For us, pickled herring was a New Year's dish, supposed to bring good luck.
When I was a kid, my Mom's sisters and their friends used to speak Polish to
tell secrets after we kids learned to spell. It was one language that many
of the neighborhood had in common, since many had refugeed through Poland
from other countries during the first world war.
