Snowed an inch or so last night & this afternoon it looked like a snowglobe out there for a couple of hours. I need to go to work tomorrow & am not looking forward to driving in it. Not too cold 20 F today & hasn't dropped with sundown.
Glad to hear from all of you. Stay safe & be careful on the roads. Judy B Z 6 Idaho----- Original Message ----- From: "james singer" <inlandjim1@q.com>

We had snow most of the day yesterday--about 4 inches accumulated-- then last night freezing rain, so this morning the snow is covered with a thin crust of ice. Have to say the dogwood outside my window is spectacular, like something Steuben would make.On Dec 21, 2008, at 8:02 AM, Catharine Carpenter wrote:Went to below zero last night! Sunny part of the day, so the roads got slushy. Frozen again when I came home just now, 16F again, roads just a bit slick, but home with no problem. Took it slow. I saw our winter friend the woodpecker opening walnuts in the back yard last week. Snow is deeper, but (s)he will be back if nothing else is available. I see 2 or 3 every winter. Sometimes when the snow is deep, they dive in & fan their wings like they're taking a dust bath & uncover the nuts so they can break them open. The little chickadees wait until they're done, then pick up any crumbs. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Catharine Carpenter" <cathycrc@comcast.net> To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Saturday, December 20, 2008 3:27 PM Subject: Re: [CHAT] check in timeIt always amuses me that, for juncos, my area defines "flying south for the winter". Took part in our area's Audubon society Christmas bird count today. We logged about 30 species. We saw a flock of nine bluebirds and logged 4 different raptors. More American tree sparrows than I could have imagined. My only disappointment was no turkeys!Cathy, west central IL, z5b On Dec 20, 2008, at 1:20 PM, Aplfgcnys@aol.com wrote:About six inches of snow here overnight, and the temperature is around 20 degrees and falling. They finally came to plow the road and our drive around noon. This is a new plow guy. The one who used to come did a really bad job - pushed piles of snow up against the garage doors so we couldn't get the cars out, etc. This one did a much better job, but I hope he is more prompt in the future. We are not on a town road so the neighborhood has to contract with a private plower. Those down near the main road don't want to pay for the whole road, so the four houses up at our end have to bear the most of it. Interestingly, yesterday juncos showed up ahead of the storm. I'd been watching for them for a couple of weeks, but hadn't seen any. Yesterday there was a flock - must have been more than a dozen - in the backyard. I guess that's why they're sometimes called "snow birds."
