I would not be surprised to find that "lamb & rice" dog foods are
really
mutton and rice. Most Americans don't even like lamb, and mutton
conjures up vague ideas of gamey-tasting meat you eat when everything
else is rationed. We've never had it either, when ours start getting a
bit past middle age we sell them. Once they've been around for a while
we don't like the idea of eating them. We're not attached to them
really
but...we do feel differently about them than we do the lambs.

In part because they're all grass fed. What I don't understand is why
it's so difficult to find mutton.

Here's a question for all of you husbands out there...oh wait, I mean
those of you into animal husbandry: We got millions of sheep in this
country. Why the heck is lamb so expensive?

Lambs are awfully cute, good thing they turn into sheep or the
freezer
would be empty. We do keep a couple lamb covers around for
emergencies.
They are like little felt sweaters. This year we are unprepared, I
wasn't expecting any births for another week; we haven't cleaned out
the
lambing pens or even done inventory on our box of supplies.
According to the forecast it's probably going to rain again tonight
so
the other two ewes have a chance to pop 'em out during the wet. Based
on
physical signs they are close, but according to the calendar they
ought
to wait a couple weeks. Dumb sheep, can't read the calendar... :-)

you need to knit some lamb sweaters for your babies!!!! I saw a
pattern
for one. Keeps 'em warm when mamma isn't around them. So cute. I love
the babies.....

Lambs are so cool. The best. Ans it's not a bad time for the ewes to
lamb. While sheep are not exactly smart, they will stay in the
barn/cote when it's cold--and the lambs will stay with them.

I guess I should read the weather forecast more often. After a
gorgeous
weekend a front moved in and it has been steadily getting colder. I
watched the sky all yesterday hoping for clear skies so we could
see
the
lunar eclipse last night, and we had nothing but scattered clouds
all
day. I was pretty surprised to get home and find water running down
the
roads - it must have rained hard at our house sometime in the
afternoon.
The sheep are back in the swamp and the horse pens are mostly a
lake.
Sigh.
We did see the eclipse though, nice and clear.
So this morning we were supposed to leave for work early, but
husband
goes out to feed and comes back to say one of our sheep has lambed
during the night. She couldn't do this when it's warm and dry, no,
had
to be when it's wet, windy and cold. We checked them out - one ewe
lamb,
already on her feet but not quite dry yet. I was hoping for twins
but
one healthy lamb is fine too. She was still in the time window
where
she might deliver another, but probably not, and we had to get
going.
Wonder what we'll find when we get home tonight?
