Our spring crop of tomatoes is over, except for the wild tomatoes. The nights are now too warm for fruit to set. So today, we ripped the vines out, piled the green fruit on the kitchen table [to be broiled for out next several breakfasts], and tomorrow we will plant the fall crop. Again, we will plant two varieties--"Early Girl," a determinant that I had good success with in California, and "Heat Wave," which is touted to handle hot weather better than other varieties.
Tomorrow or Monday, I want to do likewise with the wild tomato patch. That is, pick the whole thing. Puree and can all the ripe ones that we can't eat in a few days, and pickle all the green ones with sliced jalapenos and garlic cloves. Maybe I'll throw a Stevia leaf or two into a couple of the pickle jars just to see what will happen.
