Yep- that is what I was thinking too (about not surviving). That one is planted at a new house that was built on a postage stamp size yard, and they are asking 900K for the 2000ft house. Amazing! And, now I'm pretty sure their palm tree is going to die this winter! We all liked the look of the palm tree, so hence the pics and trying to figure out if it would survive. Thanks for the info Jim.

I don't know. I've never seen a royal that small/young that I recall. There are two strains of royals--Florida and Cuban. The Florida royal would have a better [but still not very good] chance of surviving in, say, Berkeley, but I doubt very much it could survive Sacto winters.

Hey- do you think the mystery palm might be a Royal palm? (Roystonea regia) I found a picture online that looks quite similar.

Well, if the mystery is a kentia/sentry, it's cold-hardier than the queen; the queen will be better looking, however, when they grow up.

Thanks Jim- As you've probably figured out, the friends who have the transplanted palm aren't really gardeners, and only asked for my help after they transplanted it and were afraid it was dying! The other 2 palms aren't at their house, but they like them and wanted to buy one (but only if they could survive through winter here). \
I'll plan on going over and help them cut off the fronds this weekend from the fan palm. Thanks for your help. We'll see if it survives!

Yeah, the transplanted one is a Washingtonia--probably robusta [Mexican fan palm], but could be filifera [California fan palm]; a bit hard to tell for sure from this far away. The one labeled "queen" looks like a young queen [Syagrus romanzoffiana]. The mystery palm looks like a young kentia or sentry palm [Howea forsteriana]. The young palms will look a lot better in a couple of years. Give them lots of osmocote and water.
I think the Washingtonia is planted awfully close to that wall--future problem if it survives the transplanting. For now, I'd cut off all of the mature fronds; they're not going to come back but they will abet transpiration stress as long as they have any life in them. All the tree needs at this stage is a healthy, green crown [or bud] and lots of water. That trunk is nothing but a bundle of capillaries; digging without root pruning puts a lot of stress on that system.

Hi all- Anybody know what the mystery palm is? I have several shot of
the same tree. Also, is the transplanted palm a Mexican fan palm? And
what about the other one? Thanks!
