I believe that is the tree used for the wreaths in the Greek Olympics -- and Greece certainly gets cold in the winter -- Mediterranean climate like California --

Ok- I was close- mine is Laurus Nobilis- true bay (the one you use the leaves for cooking)Theresa Kitty wrote:California Bay - Umbellularia californica is hardy to zone 7 Red Bay - Persea borbonia also to zone 7 Notes: WARNINGRed bay trees in the southeastern United States are dying due to the accidental introduction of the red bay ambrosia beetle that spreads a fungal infection called the laurel wilt.In India, "bay leaf" refers to the cassia tree (Cinnamomum cassia). All three of these are in the laurel family. In the West Indies, "bay leaf" refers to the bay rum tree (Pimenta racemosa), in the Myrtaceae. Note that the unrelated mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia), in the Ericaceae, has poisonous leaves.WARNINGSome people get an allergic reaction from contact with the foliage or the essential oils of bay laurel. Do not place bay leaves in your mouth - they can cut.Kitty neIN, Zone 5 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kitty" <kmrsy@comcast.net> To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Wednesday, November 12, 2008 5:55 PM Subject: Re: [CHAT] Where is everyone?Floridata says z 8-10 http://www.floridata.com/ref/L/laur_nob.cfm Kitty neIN, Zone 5 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pam Evans" <gardenqueen@gmail.com> To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Wednesday, November 12, 2008 5:31 PM Subject: Re: [CHAT] Where is everyone?Bay is hardy there? I never planted one because I didn't think they werehardy in zone 8A. Hmm, I put something else in that spot of course (a small viburnum) but may have to rethink the bay idea Daryl! Thanks. I was told that bay wasn't hardy here, butthe plant had rooted itself into the ground before I had a chance to plant it.It's behind my greenhouse, and is about 12' tall now. We used to go below zero every winter. The lowest we've been in recent years has been about10, perhaps briefly lower. d I got all but a couple of my patio plants into the greenhouse andrepotted my bay tree. I'm debating about planting the bay tree outside,it is right on the edge of hardiness but maybe it's worth taking a chance. I actually have room in the greenhouse for a few more pots, I looked at the home center but didn't see anything fun I had to have.--------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE GARDENCHAT-- Pam Evans Kemp TX zone 8A --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE GARDENCHAT7:32 PM --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE GARDENCHAT7:32 PM --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE GARDENCHAT--------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE GARDENCHAT
