I second that idea-I've always wanted a desert willow but I think it wouldn't survive here. High Country Gardens used to carry them but of course they will be tiny......

Ooooh! I like that idea. I know a house not too far away has one that is large- taller than the house. That one is multi-stemmed - but from the info I just looked up you can also prune/train to be more traditional trunked trees (which would be necessary since it will be next to a fence at my house). Now to find one..... Theresa Johnson, Cyndi D Civ USAF AFMC 95 CS/SCOSI wrote:Theresa what about desert willow? Chilopsis? It may not get big enough for what you want (although I have seen a truly enormous one in Santa Barbara). They are drought tolerant - even in my climate I don't have to water more than once a month - they flower all summer, they are deciduous. You would have to do some pruning to keep it tree-like and not sprawling or bushy. There is one type with very narrow willow-like leaves and one with broader leaves, which I think would be better for your situation. Hummingbirds and bees love them. They are so common as to be boring. Mind you, most or just shrubs with pink flowers, often covering is sticky aphid stuff. I'll look into the tree version before I totally rule them out. The bark sounds appealing. I agree the flowers are blah and they don't attrack either bees or humming birds (apparently people aren't the only ones not overly impressed by them!) Theresa james singer wrote:The one Andrea mentioned, Natchez, is considered the "standard" by breeders, the one to which all crepe myrtles are compared. It's quite attractive and a genuine landscape workhorse--street tree, accent plant, background color. Texas A&M's web site [sorry, no longer have alink] has a lot of good information on crepe myrtle cultivars, especially the ones developed by the National Arboretum [they are the ones, such as Natchez, named for Indian nations]. That said, I don't especially care for them. Don't know why. They are Ok, but they are everywhere here. Crepe myrtles don't get very big and I want shade for the south side of my house again someday.... Thanks forhelpingme think about this... Theresa andreah wrote:Theresa-there is another ornamental pear that is stonger than bradofrd- Calliope, or calypso, or something with a "C" It was bred after all the bradfors started splitting down the middle.Justa suggestion in case you want another. How about a crepe myrtle? Those are always great IMO. They came out and cleaned up the half that fell into the street earlier this year when it split, but made itclearthat the tree was on my property, not the right of way(apparentlythe right of way only includes the sidewalk and area between the sidewalk and street). Theresa Donna wrote:Better check your zoning/city/something before you take out that tree and buy another. When we moved here, the subdivision planted trees there. Mine died, so I was going to replace it. Found out there was a 'list' of trees that could be planted here enforced by the village. I didn't care for any of them, so I let them replace it with whatever they wanted....and I must say, theydo take care of 'that' tree coming thru pruning etc.....
