I still remember going to Hearst Castle when I was a teenager. It was amazing! I loved all the pools : )

Thank you so much for your ideas. I had looked up both the Huntington and the Descanso gardens online and wondered if they were good. I will fly in to LAX and my sister had talked about us staying around to do museums so maybe we can stay around and do both gardens and museums. Have you been to the Hearst Castle? I have been years ago and would love to do that again some year. I remember thinking how did they keep all that boxwood trimmed.

Yes the Huntington is well worth a visit. That's a good hour and a half
from Santa Barbara, about that anyway, and most of the drive is pretty
easy. In that area is also Descanso Gardens, their big claim to fame is
camellias which won't be doing much next week, but it does have other
very nice gardens to wander through.

And if you want to spend just a little more time in the car, you can hit
up the Los Angeles Arboretum, which is maybe another 20/30 minutes down
the freeway: http://www.arboretum.org/ .  But if you are not going to
stay in that area overnight it would be a bit of a long day to do two of
those gardens (I have done this, and I live about an hour away - I
wouldn't rule it out again but I was glad to sit down by the end).
If you only do one, go to Huntington. If you try two, check the
admission hours, because I think Huntington does not open until noon on
weekdays, so you would plan on one of the others first and then go
there.
There's the Getty museums, both the one in LA and the one at the beach
in Malibu, you wouldn't go there just for their gardens but if you do go
to either of them they do have some nice plantings.

You have been to Lotusland, right? Isn't your sister a member? That is a
wonderful garden and definitely deserves repeat visits. And you must
have already been to the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, I like going
there too. I'm afraid I know very little of gardens north of Santa
Barbara, can't give you any hints that direction.

The last time I went to California I got the best advice from all of
you.  I have been invited to my sisters place in Santa Barbara Sept
12-20th.  Do any of you have any advice on gardens to see or I would
also love to take a watercolor painting class.
Any advice this time.  I will fly into LAX on the 12th.  I looked up
Huntington Gardens and that looks wonderful.  Any advice on that?
