Hi Doug,

For a while I was using Digimarc watermarks (when it was free), but now
they want an obscene amount of money to embed their watermarks. For the
number of photos that I have available at hort.net it would cost me
thousands of dollars each year for their service.

I do wonder what the point of these watermarks are, though. Many of
these people stealing images could care less -- there really are
no legal consequences since I'm not using my images for profit.
There's one nursery that's continually ignored any of my requests to
remove some old images that still have Digimarc watermarks embedded
in them. The only real recourse that I have is to contact their ISP
and have their Web site terminated under the DMCA. Unfortunately,
I abhor the DMCA and don't want to support it. :)

I've tried to obfuscate theft of my images by inserting a copyright
notice and chopping the photos up into smaller sub-parts that are
visually the same online, but much harder to copy (since there are now
twelve little images to steal instead of one big one), but folks are
tenacious and have way too much time on their hands -- I still find
images reassembled and cropped to remove the copyright notice.

But the real question I have is how to deal with folks who have stolen
these images. Unless they're registered with the copyright office
beforehand, damages are much less. And since I'm not making money on
my images (I'm just an amateur), there really aren't any damages.

Chris
