Title: Re: [GWL] Brooding
How can PR responses (or lack of) NOT
influence the article you
are writing? I write garden and travel pieces. The quality of
the PR response changes the article, no matter how
hard you try
to be fair.
A return call from the founder and owner of the
nursery, product,
whatever provides so much more detail and what I
call emotion.
I've had PR people tell me to just use what is
on the Internet
webpage...they just don't get it. On the other
hand, talking to the
guy that worked and toiled with his vision for
years gets that
emotion and passion into the article along with the
facts. I try not
to do just facts. I look for an
underlying story.
I'm currently writing a travel book on NYC. I am
absolutely
shocked at how many people do not return emails and
phone calls
anymore (not just NYC..I'm working with them more
so I notice it
more). It is as though it is acceptable. I'm sorry,
but in this world
and the next, it is
rude not to respond, even late.
In contacting several NYC gardens for the book, I
encountered one
garden that racked up a huge list of several people
that did not
respond to phone or email. Keep in mind that a
mention in the book
is absolutely free publicity for them. I won't
mention which garden
unless someone wants to know off list. Anyway, I
finally sent a fax
with huge printing saying, "WILL SOMEONE PLEASE
RESPOND
TO THIS WRITER'S URGENT NEED FOR INFORMATION FOR A
BOOK ON NYC? NOBODY HAS RETURNED ANY PHONE CALLS
OR EMAILS." I received a call 10 minutes later with
a flimsy excuse
from one of the people I had called.
I wasted a lot of time (calls = money) and angry
pounding on the desk.
Do you really think
my write up (no matter how hard I try to be fair) is
as vibrant and positive for this garden as the others that responded
immediately with, "Whatever you need..." AND they did as promised
(that is a whole nuther pain in the ---).
Wow, I feel better (:>)
