Re: Brooding

Hi All,
I had a similar experience. I was writing a column on Stepables (TM) and had interviewed Fran Hopkins who owns Under A Foot Plant Company, developers of the nationally marketed Stepables line. Fran recommended her favorites in the line for our midwestern climate. I always like to mention whether specific plants are available locally when writing about them. I called a local garden center to inquire and was told by the owner, "We have thousands of plants here! Why can't you write about something we have?" My initial thought was, "EXCUSE ME? Why don't you pay me to write PR for your business?"

In fact, I had featured this garden center, and others in the area, in previous columns. As it turned out, although they carried some of the Stepables line, they didn't stock the plants that Fran had recommended. You'd think common sense might move a business owner to try to get plants that are being featured in the media, especially when given a heads up. Not the case here, but that's another issue. Two years later, they still carry Stepables, but not the ones so highly recommended for our climate.

I tried to chalk up the incident to someone having a bad day. Although I like to think it hasn't affected my column, I was miffed and probably a little less enthusiastic about the place.
