I have a reader asking about camellia...I've never seen this plant in the Indianapolis area wholesale or retail nurseries or garden centers. I don't think I've seen it as a houseplant.
Does anyone know if there's a hardy variety for USDA Zones 5 or 6? Monrovia has several hardy in USDA 7, but couldn't find any for colder zones.
Has anyone ever grown them as houseplants? I figure you could move then outdoors in summer, but are there any other considerations?
Thanks for your help.

I once had a camellia as a houseplant here in Chicago. It set buds,
but they dropped off before opening, so I never tried again.

Hi Jo Ellen,
NJ runs the gamut from Zones 5B -7. I have seen Crape Myrtle, which is
similar in hardiness (Zones 7 - 9) bloom here in Zone 5B under the
following conditions:
1. The owner, a landscape architect, planted it against the East wall of
his house, which gets morning sun and is protected from prevailing winds
by a bump-out in the wall.
2. There is an artificial pond and stream about 6-ft. in front of it. I
presume the water acts as a heat-sink.
3. The large plant (6-ft. tall) was removed from a client's site where it
was not doing well, so it cost him nothing.
So I'd say it's possible to grow them outdoors in a sheltered spot, with
the right micro-climate.
Regards,
Lois

I have a private greenhouse client with two large Camellias. They're about 7-8 feet tall so we don't move them in and out and it's a cool greenhouse (winter temps at about 50F). Camellias do well in containers and I don't see any problem moving them in and out with the season (if size allows) but they'll need a winter rest of some kind. Sitting in a dry, heated living room at 72F all winter would be problematic. If you have a place to overwinter Clivias and Cymbidiums, that would also be good for Camellias. Hey! They all begin with C.

There are indeed "hardy" Camellia. I believe Monrovia have an 'Ice Angel' series and you might also check Camellia Forest Nursery for hardy specimens. There's also a book on the subject - "Growing Camellia in Cold Climate" William Ackerman and I believe he's written another but I don't have it so it might be the same book only retitled.

Hi, Jo Ellen!
We had a camellia until it was toppled by a ginormous snow bank. We fell in love with them when we lived in London. Here's what I learned in my quest for a cold hardy specimen.
Some are rated to Zone 6 and are the result of breeding by William Ackerman, derived from Camellia japonica (Korean origin). They usually have "Winter" in their name and are fall blooming. Although I'm in Zone 5, we planted it as advised in a protected area, fertilized it well (they are heavy feeders) and admired its blossoms in its short life (boo hoo!).
Since then, we have had so many storms and lost so many trees that our property is more exposed than ever. If I thought I could find another sheltered protected area, I would try another planting AWAY from potential snow pile ups. They always call my name.
