[GWL]: Lavandula pedunculata 'Pukehou'

Lavandula is a relatively large genus containing about 20 species of aromatic shrubs and perennials native primarily to the Mediterranean region.

Lavandula is perhaps the most highly prized of all aromatic shrubs.  It can be used for dwarf hedges, small group plantings or as container plants.  Lavenders do well in most types of well drained soils, is best grown in full sun, and does well when used in seaside coastal areas.  The flowers can be dried and used as potpourri.

Lavandula pedunculata "Pukehou" t.m. (pronounced pook-ee-who) Zone 7 -  9 U.S.D.A.

Pukehou is a Maori name meaning" Hills of Dedicaton."  This striking new Lavender introduction originates from New Zealand and the breeder Mrs. Mary Robertson,Pukehou Nursery in Manakau, a small nursery on the North Island of New Zealand.  The interesting thing about this variety is that it produces up to six bracts or 'ribbons' per head compared to only two on most other cultivars of the species.  Showy, large ribbon-like bracts appear above lovely purple flowers to give a superb Spring / Summer display.  Growth is compact and bushy with aromatic foliage.  Suitable for most gardens, Pukehou is ideally suited as a container plant.  A light prune after flowering will encourage bushiness and new flower growth for the next season.
