Listserv Migration Question Answered

If spam is such a problem on the listserv, why not migrate this to more
modern technology, like a Google Group or, for that matter, a LinkedIn or
Facebook group?
-------------------------------
This listserv was originally a Yahoo list, and we had nothing but trouble.
Because Yahoo is public access, spammers went nuts. And, our archives were
corrupted. Google has similar problems; I looked into it.
Because we are a limited access listserv that requires authorization to
join, public-access servers create huge problems. And, ads show up on
messages. That's why we settled on the University of Kentucky's listserv
platform. Controlling access is simple, and up to about five months ago,
spammers weren't a problem either. They've become more sophisticated on
every listserv and web platform.
Due diligence takes care of the attacks, however. I have a number of
filters set up that flag messages with potential problems. I have to
phyically approve or reject these problematic posts. You don't have that
capability on public-access platforms such as Google, Facebook and others.
My goal is to protect listserv members against spam, phishing and viruses.
Heated discourse amongst list members doesn't bother me, because I feel we
are all adults and eventually sort out things. We don't need a moral or
ethical policeman. We had one previously, and it made everyone
uncomfortable. But, spam, phishing and viruses are cardinal sins. That's
why I'll alway act first and ask questions later.
Again, thank you to those who vouched for Dee Nash and filled me in on her
problematic post.
