It's a question for a copy write lawyer.
I too have had copy stolen along with photos copied right out of the  
newspaper.
Usually stories are owned by the writer when they are sold for a one- 
time use.
But with the internet, businesses can link to a story and put it on  
their website.
It's a tough chase to get paid.
