Just think how often garden writers are asked to rehash the same, basic,
beginner's hand's on material.
When I speak, the most common comment I get is, "I don't 'really' garden,
but I always read your column." I have always been aware that I have two
kinds of readers, serious gardeners and duffers, and not a column gets
written without thinking of both of them. Not both readers, I hope, but both
kinds. So I do the first vegetable garden, I do petunias, I even stifle my
gag reflex and do geraniums, but I also do the uncommon plants and more
sophisticated design. The better gardeners skip the petunias, the duffers
read the more advanced stuff waiting for the punch line and determine that
they are really, really going to try it. I would like to think that I grow
my readers. One or two of them. I would really like to think that.
Birds and Blooms assumes that their readers are retarded and will always
remain so.
