Re: Trash
Sounds like you've never found the acorn, Duane.
I have had folks...older folks...bring in B&B to show me. They think I should be writing for them.
Maybe I should, I have been told the lurididityness of my prose closely matches the purples in their pictures.
Clearly there is a market for this. It is not our market. I am not convinced that it is hurting our working arena.
How many potential dollars are the "readers" of this pub shifting away from us? Do we see this pub as a threat?
Can we look at this as a branding exercise that separates the wheat from the chaff; both reader and content producer?
Can we say, "Thanks for the self-id folks, you go stand in that part of the field."?
I don't want to suggest that anyone, however strong their comment, is approaching this with arrogance; but, I am detecting a thread of hubris entwining itself amongst our posts. And that should raise an immediate call for arealistic analysis of our craft and our markets without condemnation directed at the consumer. No matter how often or loudly we bemoan the existence...and apparent success...of a "lesser" effort, we can't deny it.
There was once a chemistry professor at Columbia who wrote shclock SF under the name of Lucky Starr; if that chap could work both ends of the spectrum successfully, maybe we should consider a similar approach.
And before I read any potential responses to this post I'm gonna go put on my fire-suit.
Dan
