Re: [GWL]: GWAA awards entry fee

I can handle the entry fee, I get paid well.  What I can't handle is unfair competition.  I write a weekly column for one of the countries best weekly papers with a circulation of 25,000 that goes up to 45,000 with newsstand sales in the summer season.  But how can I possibly compete with other writers who get paid in triple digits per article or who are on salary with larger circulation papers and thus have infinitely more resources at their disposal.  Am I expected to compete against writers for the Washington Post, The New York Times etc.  If this is to be a fair and professional competition the very least the GWAA should do is establish circulation criteria within each category.  When my paper competes on statewide and on a national basis that's exactly how the competition is set up, by circulation.

On another note...am I the only one who has notice the degradation of the gardening columns in the NY Times.  Ann Raver has written some wonderful stuff but now they seem to have moved virtually all of the gardening material out of the general circulation editions and stuffed them into the local sections on Sunday.  You'd think a paper this large would be able to find enough advertising revenue to support regional material (and regionally knowledgeable writers) in their regional metropolitan editions...like they use to.  The Times covers a very large area with daily delivery...I suspect three, maybe even four hardiness zones with some very dramatic differences.  The general, cover all the bases articles are best suited for magazines not NEWSpapers.
