A couple of things in answer to this.  One a couple of years ago or so I
began to be appalled at how frequently when I would speak about gardening
form seed a member of the audience would speak up or come up to me dierectly
and rather wistfully say "garden from seed, I don't know if I could do
that". My reply has become "of course you can it's as natural as can be and
your ancestors have been doing for thousands of years. I assure you this was
not an isolated comment but reflects the fear of many of many a novice
gardener that this is a complicated process.  All the things we can do to
help them be sucessful and get a feel of the satisfaction that comes from
sowing lettuce seeds directly in the soil or from their own transplants.
The second is many healthy youngish people are moving into retirement and
will be intersted in gardening but I think they will need help. This is
potentially a market of readers about gardening.  I don't think sound
practical advice ever goes out of style and it doesn't have to be tedious.
