Re: [GWL]: Recession and garden writing
Graham,
What a bummer! I'd think with your name recognition that the newspaper
would keep you on. I suffered essentially the same situation, beginning in
late 2000. My contract at Woman's Day calls for so may articles per year to
be written. In October 2000, no new contract appeared. I was asked to
write one article in a year's period, but my name remained on the masthead,
and the magazine never hesitated to forward reader mail to me for answering.
Nor did they hesitate calling me with gardening questions and ask for my
perspective on things or advice. The situation has changed--a couple of
months ago, I received another contract and more assignments. The reason
I'm relating my story is that I see a large magazine such as Woman's Day
with 27 million circulation as a good indicator of where things will go
workwise. Ad revenues are picking up again, and readers are buying magazine
regularly. The worst seems to be over. I believe the UK went into
recession later than the USA. So it would follow that your recovery will be
later, too. So....hang in there. It will get better.
