Re: Measureable results from Twitter: gardenwriters Digest, Vol 83, Issue 3

I'm new to the listserve but have a success story based on Twitter. In spring of this year I was contacted by the web editor for Fine Gardening's blog. She had followed a few links from my personal blog and a local website I write for. I always post links to my on-line work at Twitter.

Long story short: She wanted to add a west coast, sustainable, humorous voice to their blog. That's me. I was soon offered a paid job posting a minimum of two blogs per month (though I generally exceed that), they've "branded" my blog with a catchy title (Cool Green Gardens - with my own logo) and I've now been asked to submit story ideas for the print magazine. I'm a hard-core believer in social networking for self-promotion. Yesterday I received a message from another national magazine who I've connected with via LinkedIn. They want a few queries for articles for next year. [link: http://www.finegardening.com/blog/sustainable-landscaping]

Hope this helps.

One point that has been alluded to, but not specifically spelled out is
that one region's thug is another's regions treasure.  I saw mondarda in
a northwestern Massachusetts garden, and commented what a thug it was
for me in Virginia.  For them it's a bit tricky to grow, certainly not
invasive.  I kept thinking about that conversation the day I spent 8
hours pulling out the mondada, sifting the soil to try to get all the
roots, only to have it return next spring.

Announcement!

After some tech stress I got my files straight and published one of my
garden titles on Amazon's Kindle. It is "Creating and Planting Alpine
Gardens" by Rex Murfitt (he won a GWA writing award for it in 2006) and for
now it seems to be the only rock gardening book available in the Kindle
format. I'm  planning to put other books into Kindle mode too, if this goes
well.

It is being sold at Amazon for $8.99 at the following address:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002ZCYAVG

You have probably heard that there is a free software version of Kindle that
runs on a PC or iPhone and certain iPods instead of as a dedicated device.
If you want to try it, go to
http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=kcp_pc_mkt_lnd?docId=1000426311.

I'm happy that at last I got this Kindle version of the alpine book up and
running, but I couldn't figure out how to include its illustrations so I am
putting many of them up on my website.

Thanks, Nancy, for the news about Marty Figley. Not only was she a longtime GWA member, but she?attended the annual symposiums regularly for many years, too. A delightful person. I missed her in Raleigh.

Hi All,

A while back, quite a few members of this listserv opened Twitter
accounts. Can anyone comment on measureable results (sales, assignments,
etc.) attributable to either your Facebook or Twitter presence?

Regards,
Lois
