Re: Top 10 gardening books of all time?
"A Treatise on the Theory and Practice of Landscape Gardening, Adapted to
North America." 1841, Andrew Jackson Downing. I have not read it in its
entirety or its original pressing. But the extracts that I've read through
studies of Olmstead, Vaux and early pioneers of the genre have all indicated
that this was the seminal work that encourage the art and practice of fine
gardening in America. He was the first man to write about the art, theory
and practice of landscape and residential architecture. Tragically, his
life was cut short by being consumed in a fire started by an exploding
boiler on Hudson River steam boat.
I especially like how he connected morality, life style and design: as in,
"There is a moral influence in a country home." Way ahead of his time!

Subject: [GWL] Top 10 gardening books of all time?
My name is Ryan and I'm a Top-10 list addict...I could spend hours on Amazon
Listmania lists, reading how others rank their top books or DVDs. If
there's an article about the Top 10 ways to do something or Top 10 things to
buy, I'll read it.
And I'm not alone...whenever a TV network needs to fill a slot, they bring
in shows that list "top" commercials, movies, etc. For example, VH1 fills
hours of programming with the top lists of everything -- from the "top songs
of the 1980s" to the top one-hit-wonders of all time.
So what are the Top 10 gardening books of all time, in your opinion? And I
mean the top 10 gardening books ever, the absolute best gardening books in
you opinion...what you would suggest to a gardening newbie (or expert) as
your "canon" of gardening literature.
My only "rules" in replying to this question is please tell us why you
consider the book worthy for your list. Other than that, go crazy...fiction
to nonfiction, beginner to advanced, any garden topic, just as long as the
book relates in some fashion to gardening.
What are the Top 10 gardening books in your opinion?
Looking forward to your suggestions. At your service,
Ryan McGrath
