Hello Margaret,
    You are right and you are wrong.... many garden clubs will do their best
to obtain speakers for little or nothing. Some will not pay speakers for
they do not have the funds. some do have the funds and will not pay. Haven't
figured it all out except to say that I get paid in some fashion or I do not
make the trip. I would say 90% of the time my fee is met up front in
dollars. The rest is my giving back to an organization, or the time donated
is to my advantage.
    I use slides taken in my garden and focus on local or regional
gardening. My fees are set up for staying within 50 miles of my home. You
