I used to hesitate recommending worm bins for vermicomposting kitchen
wastes in inner city apartments because I couldn't think of how
people with no room for gardens would make use of the vermicompost.
Ruth Messigner, former president of the burrough of Manhattan
alleviated my concerns when she said. "The urban forest can make use
of every bit of vermicompost city dwellers' worm bins can produce.
Considering the kind of abuse city trees receive, and the kinds of
materials which are dumped around their bases, any tree could benefit
if people would dump their worm bins around the base. As policy
makers we would never prohibit it, and the trees would be better off."
A healthy movement encouraging vermicomposting of kitchen wastes
exists in New York City, powered by the Compost Project sponsored by
the NY Department of Sanitation, and carried on by the enthusiastic
Master Composter programs of the Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, and
New York botanical gardens. They have even produced a brochure on
adopting trees of the urban forest, with classes on tree care,
pruning, and applying compost.
Long live city trees fed by vermicompost!
