[GWL]: Comparing Varieties

I write more about fruit than vegetables, but one method that helps
clarify varietal differences in fruit is comparing a new variety with a
standard one. "Ripens X days before the standard, keeps X weeks longer in
cold storage" etc. Seems like making comparisons would reduce the problem
of subjective answers - which is the "best" one. I actually got the first
really good demonstration of that in a vegetable crops class in college.
The professor, Dr. James Baggett at Oregon State U., grew dozens of
varieties of each vegetable and let us compare them. That was a better
education than any book could EVER have given.
When you can see the differences in the varieties laid out in front of
you (preferably from having grown them yourself) it's usually pretty easy to
give the reader data that lets THEM decide if the new variety really is the
best.
