Do better digitals handle this contrast better? Or is this
a flaw of all/most of them?
I don't want to invest in a better digital if I'm still
going to be unhappy with the results. In that case, I'm
better off paying for film and developing.

First, I suggest you go through your digital camera manual and see what they say in terms of light exposure and how to manage dark/light images using manual controls (I assume that you are using your digital as an auto point and shoot most of the time or at least setting light control to automatic).

Second, you may need a different camera as different cameras handle light differently.

My old (5 years) olympus camedia was/is incredible at handling different light situations on automatic exposure. My new Cannon (much fancier and not cheap) is not nearly as good at handling light on automatic exposure so I spend more time with it in manual mode.
