Although some writers like and need to be on the regular review copy list from a publisher, I prefer to request a copy when I need one. This works most of the time, although recently a requested review copy of a book turned up two weeks after my article appeared (and four weeks after I requested it). I feel no obligation to write about unsolicited review books. I often donate requested and unrequested review copies to the library.
The publisher is responsible for sending out review copies. As an author, I give copies of my book to people who have helped me during research for my book, to our local (and world-famous) Miller Horticultural Library and to the various and sundry charity auctions that ask for one. And, of course, to all my dear friends and family. But the cost of review copies should come out of the publisher's pocket.
