let's talk money
A recent negotiation between a photographer and a magazine (I often
work with the photographer, and we propose articles together), has
reminded me of the differences in how we get paid. Or are there
differences?
Photographers - do you have a set fee schedule, according to factors
such as size of photo and placement in the magazine, which is
standard no matter what the publication?
Writers - do you have a set fee, $ per word or by-the-inch, which is
standard no matter what the publication? How often do you try to
negotiate for a higher fee, and how often do you take what the
publication pays? This applies more to those who write for a living
than it does to those who write to promote a nursery or landscaping
business.
What are the factors that you consider when accepting an assignment?
