Re: Compost

I am a stalwart member of the pile-stuff-up-and-wait school, partly because
it works well enough, but mostly because I know my readers. Tell them to
build a classic three bay system and move the contents from one bin to the
next to the next regularly and they will agree with the wisdom but never get
around to actually doing it. Tell them to pile stuff up and they might.

I also try to talk them out of buying a commercial composter, because a 12
foot length of turkey wire or snow fencing is both cheaper and better. Most
commercial units are too small. When the wire bin is full, just unwrap the
fencing and set it up in the next spot.

Admittedly some readers will want to go the whole nine yards, but they don't
need my advice. They are mostly people who think a 500 dollar composter is
better than a 100 dollar composter, and anyway they already have the 12
volume Rodale Encyclopedia of Compost.

One thing I might recommend, though I tell them they can ignore me as they
usually do, is to bag leaves in the fall to mix in with all the grass
clippings May will bring.

When my pile shrinks to half its original size, I tear into it with my
Mantis and in five minutes have wonderful, sweet smelling, rich compost.
