Re: Clivia
Lois:
Clivias are great house plants and like all of us, appreciate a time in the open air, preferably under the shade of a high-limbed tree. But they must be kept cool for a couple of months in late autumn and early winter to start the formation of flower buds to delight us for early spring.
This plant is a salute to history as the genus name refers to the Duchess of Northumberland, née Charlotte Florentina Clive, granddaughter of the famous Robert Clive, the man credited with establishing English credentials in India and known to admirers as the conqueror of India. It was Charlotte who first brought plants into flower in England.
There are cultivars with yellow flowers and variegated leaves but for the best flowers, I prefer the plant that Charlotte grew. Remember when watering to let the soil dry out before watering again. And, too, let plants get large enough to almost break the pot before potting on. Peter
