New York accommodation

I'm an Australian garden writer with the chance of a four-night,  
first-time stopover in New York City in May to take in some gardens  
(botanic gardens, gardens around Frick Collections etc that I'm told  
are worth a look). What's stopped me in my tracks is the cost of  
accommodation in New York (at the moment our Aussie dollar is woeful  
even compared to yours). Anyone know a cheap, clean, safe hotel to  
stay in a central location (nothing flash needed as I'm alone and  
just need somewhere to bed the head)?
