Re: school gardens

If her facts were correct, and the entire school system was failing, I
thought she made a few valid points about not basing the entire curriculum
around gardening.

However, I also found her bias about the Hispanic or Latino children really
showed her own prejudice. I kept wondering how could growing a head of
lettuce in the school garden be an automatic negative for the grandchildren
or children of itinerant farmers. You might as well classify me as the
same. Although I am not Latino, my grandparents both worked as farm labor
in Missouri and Oklahoma. They moved with the crops to make money, and they
were extremely poor, as were my parents. They also, at various times, had a
chicken farm, ran a grocery store, etc. Instead of thinking this a burden,
they passed down their love of the soil and raising chickens and good food
to me.

Anytime we try to put everyone into the same hole, as if we were pegs
instead of people, we demean each other.

I wonder what her story is.
