Re: India
While Dr. Parmar's response was well written and provides an insight into
the causation of outsourcing I sincerely hope that the conclusion obtained
by extending the outsourcing argument to a final conclusion does not occur.
1. If all decisions are made based on cost or return on investment
then the world will become a drabber and unhappy place.
2. The final conclusion to outsourcing seems to indicate that
everyone in the United States and, in fact, all of the richer world
economies are doomed to using more and more of their capital since
everything is outsourced until they reach the same economic level as the
countries to which they outsource to.
3. While written outsourcing may be acceptable (a conclusion that I
do not agree with) the outsourcing of verbal activities, such as customer
support, is not acceptable. CS agents do their best, but Indian English
does not translate well into Texanese, with much frustration on both
sides.
My observations above were not intended to be negative to those folks in
India who provide such services. Obviously, they are more literate than I
am, since they speak their native tongue as well as English.

India has world class expertise available in many fields including
publishing. It is much cheaper to live here than United States due to which
services cost here much less than the US and many European countries. China
is cheaper in India but they don't have expertise in copy editing (they do
not study English).
I got an opportunity to attend the Annual Meeting of NAFEX in 2004. One of
the worries of NAFEX Board of Directors(I had attended their meeting too)
was the rising cost of publishing their magazine, POMONA. I had suggested
them to get the printing done in India as it was very cheap here. I had
also discussed with a local printer who had agreed to print it for around
40-50 cents.
But they did not like it as they did not like outsourcing.
But it will have be done ultimately for staying in the business profitably.
